Two new Sunday residencies

Here at Liverpool Acoustic we thought we'd share with you a Christmas gift...

And to be seasonally apt our gift to you is news of two more acoustic events for the Liverpool Acoustic Diary - both of which are new residencies for Sundays.

Nouveau Django have a regular gig every Sunday afternoon in one of our favourite venues - The Mocha Lounge, on Sir Thomas Street.

The event is free and runs from 1.30pm to around about 3.30pm for the foreseeable future.

For those of you who don't know, Nouveau Django are Micky Dunne on guitar, Hayden John on violin, and George Maher on guitar. These three play a distinctive brand of highly infectious gypsy jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grapelli. 'Tis a terriffic, toe-tapping treat for any Sunday afternoon!

www.nouveaudjango.com or www.themochalounge.co.uk

Karl Lund does a 60 to 90 minutes set upstairs in Hannahs Bar, Hardman Street every Sunday from 11pm after the stand-up comedy club.

Karl performs acoustic covers with a twist, jazzy versions of Jackson 5's 'I Want You Back', a male's take on Cyndi Lauper's 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun', transforming Tori Amos's haunting piano based songs to uplifting guitar numbers, and maybe there'll be room for some original material too!

From Sunday 21st December and every Sunday thereafter, Karl will often be performing with guest musicans such as Michael Smith on the cello. There's a nice relaxed atmosphere where all are welcome.

Happy Christmas from Liverpool Acoustic

'Twas the night before Christmas and all round the house...

Actually, it's the night before the night before Christmas and here at Liverpool Acoustic we'd like to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

And remember, if you're heading out to one of the regular acoustic events in the Liverpool Acoustic Diary you should check in advance with the organiser to find out whether or not it's still happening - particularly if it falls on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year's Eve or New Year's Day!

Walton acoustic music hotbed shocker!

We said in previous posts that we'd fill you in on the new events that have been added to the Liverpool Acoustic Diary in recent weeks. So here are two more.

And who would have thought that the Liverpool district of Walton would turn out to be such a hotbed of acoustic music? [Well, maybe not quite a hot bed - more like a cosy bed with a hot water bottle in it.]

The Walton Social Club Acoustic Night is the first of the two Walton-based events.

This is an open mic night, featuring folk, country, rock, and original music.

It takes place every Thursday from 8.30pm to 11.30pm and can be found in the upstairs room

The event is run by Carol and Sunny, and you can get more information by phoning the club on 0151 525 2626

Walton Social Club, 7 Church Road West, Walton, Liverpool L4 5TX [Google map]

Walton Music Club proudly states that it is "the home for music enthusiasts in Liverpool". I suppose we'll have to visit to see if they're boasts are idle or not.

The club features a wide range of music, including bluegrass, soul, folk, R'n'B, traditional, standards, pop, jazz...

Everyone is welcome, whether you're going along to play, sing or just listen.

Sessions take place at the County Ward Labour Club, 39 Hale Road, Liverpool L4 3RL [Google map]

What's more, there are TWO sessions every week - Friday at 8.45pm, and Sunday at 8.30pm

Get well soon, T-J

Taking place at the Brew Tea Bar on St Paul's Square (off Dale Street) the organisers are looking for acoustic musicians who are happy to play at lower acoustic volumes but still enjoy the fun of improvising with other musicians. Drum Kit (with brushes), Stand up Bass will be provided. (Please bring your own instruments)

Starts at 5.00pm and ends approx 8.00pm

To book your slot call in or phone Julian on 07808003372.

Jacqui's Folk Club this Tuesday

If you've been feeling a little upset about the regular events that have recently ended (or are currently on hold) then we've got just the thing for you. Over the next week or so we'll be letting you know about some new events that have recently been added to the diary that you might want to consider trying out instead.

In 1964 Jacqui McDonald, with Bridie O'Donnell, formed the first full-time British female folk-song duo. Their names were soon shortened to 'Jackie and Bridie', and later to 'Jacqui and Bridie'.

Jacqui is now a solo performer in her own right, with many CDs and books available.

You might be asking why we're telling you all this. Well, Jacqui provides a monthly folk club in Liverpool, at Sefton Park Cricket Club

Jacqui's Folk Club meets on the third Tuesday every month at Sefton Park Cricket Club. It starts at 8.30pm and entry is £2.50. There's no club in August, and the Christmas Dinner takes place in December, which just happens to be this coming Tuesday 16th.

Jacqui mainly sings in the first half, plus input from others, while the second half has input from othersingers/musicians.

Club members are not keen to book artists, but very happy to listen to others. They are keen to encourage performers, from the "new" to the more experienced.

Two events this Friday - time to toss that coin!

Isn't it always the way? You wait all week for a Christmas party then two come along at once! Ho, hum...

Therefore you might want to toss a coin (the coin in question being an American dollar) to decide what to do this coming Friday 12th December.

Your choice is between the Mellowtone Chrismas Party [heads - George Washington] and the Acoustic Dream Xmas Gig [tails - Statue of Liberty].

Here's the lowdown for both gigs, just in case you need help making your mind up and you don't fancy the coin-tossing option.

Postponed and cancelled events

There are so many events in the Liverpool Acoustic diary these days that it's not possible for us to contact every single event organiser on a regular basis just to check that their event is still running.

We are therefore grateful to those of you who keep us up to date with what's happening, and (just as importantly) what's not happening.

One of our supporters (thanks Tony!) has informed us of the closure of a number of regular events, while event organisers have let us know about some others. So here goes...

The welcome return of ACOUSTIC SLICE which was due to take place on Tuesday 9th December has been postponed due to unforseen circumstances. Alun Parry (for 'tis his event) tell us that it will return in the new year on a date to be confirmed. Rest assured, once we know we'll let you know too.

The OPEN MIC at THE CASA which took place every Monday evening has come to an end. It's a shame because it's such a great venue. Maybe it couldn't compete with the other events that also take place on a Monday night. Who knows?

STRONG BREW was a weekly open mic event that took place at THE STATIC GALLERY on Roscoe Lane. Unfortunately this is no longer a going concern - could the brew have been a little too strong?

ACOUSTIC BLISS the weekly acoustic showcase and open mic night at the BLACKBURNE ARMS HOTEL is on hold for the time being due to refurbishment work at the venue. Sue Cullen reports that the event will continue at some time in the future, and that the Acoustic Dream events at The Zanzibar are still taking place.

There is some doubt about whether or not JOHNSONS SONGWRITERS CLUB is still going. If anyone knows either way please contact us and let us know.

SATORI & SONG is on hold until some time in the New Year. Hannah Platt assures us that it will continue, although it could possibly end up at a different venue on a different night of the week. Once again, we'll let you know as soon as we have any news.

If you find anything else in the Liverpool Acoustic Diary liverpoolacoustic.co.uk/diary that's not accurate, please let us know by using the Contact Us form on the website or by emailing contact[at]liverpoolacoustic.co.uk - remembering to replace the [at] with an @ (as if you didn't know!).

Finally, we don't want you to think that events are being cancelled left, right and centre and that there will be nothing left to go to. On the contrary - there are three new events that have been added to the diary just this week and we'll be telling you all about them in future News and Reviews postings.

Saturday venue change - Alistair Said

We've just been informed that Alistair Said's gig on Saturday has had to be moved from the Domino Gallery and will now take place at The Mocha Lounge on Sir Thomas Street, from 8pm.

Alister will be supported by the return of Campbell Todd for a special one-off gig.

Spoilt for choice Friday and Saturday

Isn't it strange how dates can conspire against us? There are some days when there's nothing special in the Liverpool Acoustic diary, apart from the regular, weekly open mic nights and folk clubs.

And then Friday and Saturday come along and, kerpow! we're spoilt for choice! Full details for all of these events can be found by clicking on the entry in the Liverpool Acoustic Diary liverpoolacoustic.co.uk/diary

Friday 5th December 2008

The Kevin Critchley Outfit - perform at The Zanzibar. KCO had hoped to have their new cd available but it's been delayed so you'll have to content yourselves with watching them play live. We're not saying they've got lots of energy on stage, but they've been asked if they'd mind being hooked up to the National Grid!

Friday 5th December 2008

Music@Mocca - this monthly event is becoming a regular favourite on the circuit. Last month saw lots of money being raised for charity, whereas this month they'll be raising good cheer instead. Ho, ho, ho!

Friday 5th December 2008

Ragz finishes her autumn tour with a gig at the Unity Theatre. There are still a few cheaper tickets available - you should contact Ragz direct if you're interested. Heck, you might even be able to pick up a copy of the new cds too, if you're very lucky.

Saturday 6th December 2008

The Family Folk-up have their Winter Warm-up tonight. Appearing on the bill at St Brides are Revenge Tragedies, John Fairhurst, The Random Family and Stealing Sheep.

Saturday 6th December 2008

Alistair Said has his final gig of the year at the Domino Gallery on Upper Newington. His special guests are Campbell Todd.

Liverpool Acoustic Newsletter - December 2008

It's December, and time to deck the halls with boughs of plastic holly and cheap tinsel from one of those temporary Christmas shops. Ah, yes, the season of goodwill, good food, good drink, and good company, is also the season of crap presents, nauseating Christmas music, and chronic indigestion. But we love it really, don't we?

However, Christmas does tend to play havoc with the schedules of weekly and monthly events, so if you're planning on going out to an acoustic event then it's always worth checking beforehand just to see if it's still due to take place. If you turn up to an event and you're the only one there you'll feel like a right turkey, won't you?

SPOTLIGHT

In the Liverpool Acoustic Spotlight for December 2008 is Campbell Todd. Neil Campbell and Stuart Todd have been performing together for many years in one guise or another. Their collaboration as Campbell Todd came to an end earlier this year, but has since been revived for a series of one-off gigs in December and into 2009. The Spotlight audio show and blog showcases the Campbell Todd partnership and plays four of their best solo and joint songs. You can listen to the show on the Liverpool Acoustic homepage, but if you want to read the shownotes, and catch up on previous shows, then you should visit the Spotlight page.

DIARY

December's diary is, not surprisingly, less busy than the three months from September to November. However, with the regular supply of open mic nights, folk clubs, and showcase events there's still plenty of festive acoustic cheer to go round.

If you fancy braving the winter weather then here are a few December highlights for you :-

Monday 1st - Come Strut Your Stuff kicks off the season of advent with a feast of poetry and acoustic music. It takes place at The Egg Cafe on Newington and is hosted by Liverpool Acoustic's Graham Holland, plus special guest co-host Wesley Byrne. The festivities are free, and kick off at 8pm - although if you want to perform then be there before 7.45 to get your name on the list.

Friday 5th - The Kevin Critchley Outfit perform their final gig of the year at The Zanzibar. However, you might have to flip a coin to decide between that, the Music@Mocha night, and Ragz's end of tour concert at The Unity.

Saturday 6th - Alistair Said is holding an intimate evening of acoustic music at The Domino Gallery on Upper Newington, with guests Campbell Todd. If you're looking for something a little bigger then the Family Folk-up are celebrating the season with their Winter Warm-up at their regular St Brides venue.

Friday 12th - With the temporary suspension of the Saturday night Acoustic Bliss gigs (see News and Reviews below) we have to be content with the return of Acoustic Dream, upstairs at The Zanzibar. It's another great night of acoustic music raising money for a worthy cause.

Saturday 13th - If The X-Factor Grand Final isn't for you then why not check out The Lancashire Hotpots? Famous for such instant classics as Chippy Tea, Keys Wallet Phone, and He's Turned Emo, our flat cap-wearing chums from the Red Rose County will be entertaining the masses with a Christmas spectacular!

Thursday 18th - The monthly Canvas night at 3345 Parr Street is sure to be a good night out, with acoustic music and dj sets until late.

And that's it. Er... don't forget to check with the organisers before venuring out to an event this month, particularly if it falls on a public holiday!

You can find out more information about any of the above by clicking on the name of the event in the Liverpool Acoustic Diary

NEWS AND REVIEWS

Satori & Song (last Thurday of the month) is on hold at the moment while a couple of problems are ironed out. Hannah Platt assures us it will resume in the New Year, although the date and venue are yet to be confirmed. Add Hannah on facebook or check her MySpace profile for up-to-date information.

Acoustic Bliss has been taking place every Saturday night at the Blackburne Arms Hotel. Unfortunately, due to refurbishment (the pub, not the event!), it's on hold for the time being, but the occasional Acoustic Dream is still taking place at The Zanzibar.

Jack Roberts' final residency date at Heebie Jeebies on Tuesday 2nd December has been cancelled. If you were planning on going along, why not go to Mochacoustic instead?

GUESTBOOK

The original Liverpool Acoustic guestbook has been under attack recently by a particularly cunning spam bot, so we've moved over to a new guestbook hosted by a different company. This means that it's currently devoid of lovely messages to make us all at Liverpool Acoustic feel warm and fuzzy inside, so why not spread some love and show some appreciation in the form of an entry in the new guestbook? You'll go into Santa's 'Good Book' if you do!

EMAIL SUBSCRIPTION

The number of people receiving the News and Reviews posts by email continues to rise. If you want to be included then simply add your email address to the box on the home page and click 'Subscribe'. You'll then be sent an email asking for you to confirm your subscription, and once you've clicked the link in the email you'll be added to the list. You can unsubscribe at any time and we promise we won't cry if you do. We also promise that your email address is NEVER shared with any other group, organisation or individual.

Happy Christmas to you all,

Graham (on behalf of the Liverpool Acoustic team)
